It’s a rainy Sunday in the PNW. Time to organize my LP’s. Took longer than anticipated and realized I had way more Bill Nelson and Paul Revere and the Raiders than I knew.

Speaking of still being good

i’m falling, in a supersonic daydream i stumble through the zero hour, hold on i’ll be right there, hold on i’ll be right there - Dave Doughman (Swearing at Motorists - I feel transparent)

Tuesday’s Pretzel Night (EP) - 1996 on the now infamous Spare Me Records

Jsymphonically ( how i learned to stop and love the song)

Follow up on the last.

Sony has fallen at every DRM hurdle and famously locked down their network and minidisc players with proprietary software (SonicStage) and formats (atrac). Thankfully, a open source project called jsymphonic is available to get music on and off of this old walkman. I love that there are people out there still working on making old abandoned, but perfectly serviceable hardware accessible. I must admit some of the documentation could use some help. Specifically I had to generate a key file for my walkman. This is surprisingly easy.

  • install the MP3 FileManager Application from SONY on any compatible PC ( i was able to run it on a windows 10 VM).
  • once installed navigate to the install location “C:\Program Files\Sony\MP3 File Manager” (or \Program Files (x86)\ if ruining in 64 bit and run the CopyTool.exe as an admin. This will place a new folder on your player titled MP3FM. The DviD.dat file may need to be moved from there to the root for Jsymphonic to recognize it.

I have been listening to this thing for a few days and there is a lovely feeling of nostalgia as well and something purposeful about plugging in and turning off other distractions. I went through a half day of work just letting tunes play into my head without pings, boops, and accidental ads distract me every few mins.

Get out there use old tech and enjoy yourself!

I found this forum post helpful.

Little bit of nostalgia. Pulled out the ole Sony NW-HD3 and listening to Submission Hold a band with a message that is more important now than ever. Submission Hold-What holds back the Elephant #submissionhold #sony #networkwalkman

A silver Sony Network Walkman NW-HD3 displaying a music track on its screen is resting on a wooden surface.

Sunday brunch playlist has been pretty great so far. Next up Deep Forest. A reminder that there is a benefit to seeking out and owning music so that you can be pleasantly surprised when you put it on shuffle. #plexamp

A Plexamp music playlist is displayed on a screen featuring various songs and artists.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Get Up Kids. If you were of a certain age 4 minute mile was an essential album. Matt Pryor’s distinct voice is a big part of their charm. Imagine my surprise to know he is releasing his 7th solo album. I have some catching up to do.

Been super busy as of late and seems i have totally slept on Deep Sea Diver

They are making me quite happy right now.

My favorite space wizard surprised me with my second favorite space wizard. Green Mind was a seminal album in my life, right up there with Sonic Youth’s Sister and Daydream Nation. My heart and ears are having a very nice evening!

Perfect for a day that felt like it was gonna get me. Posi vibes out to all those out there struggling. Take a listen Concierto de Aranjuez #nowlistening #jazz #vinyl

Another successful trip to grit city to find good music to play of an evening. This time we made our way to Drastic Plastic and it did not disappoint scoring a copy of Bill Nelson’s debut solo LP, along with a BeBop Deluxe Drastic Plastic promo poster, and some more Coleman Hawkins et al.

Record store haul. Chet Baker Quintet - Blues for a Reason, Chastity Belt - Live Laugh Love, Bud Shank - Brazil! Brazil! Brazil! #vinyl #lp #chastitybelt

20+ years of music - a reckonmembering

Today I am revisiting a play list I made some time ago. It is populated by music that i have been listening to for at least 20 years. This, is itself a bittersweet study in aging, but also a joyful recognition of various moments in my life. I tend to recall very specific moments when I listen to a song. Whether that is the first time I heard a particular song or the foundation of some core memory.

As a result while listening to this playlist various moments come back full force.

Thumb - Dinosaur Jr. (outside the starlite motel going to see a girlfriend i didn’t like)
Schizophrenia - Sonic Youth (walking home from my job at a pizza place at 1 am on a winter night)
Girlfriend - Matthew Sweet (vibing stereo lights in a young ladies basement)
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys (song #1 on side two of a mix tape made by Danz from Chicago as i walked the college quad)
Sweetness - Yes (going to see buffalo 66 on houston in NYC and seeing VIncent handing out flyers)
Basketcase - The Vindictives (listening to this on vinyl in a spare room of a 1920s apt with a tiny 1960’s portable tv with just static on.)
I Get Along Without You Very Well - Billie Holiday (rocking my daughter to sleep on a warm late summer day the light filtering through white cotton curtains)
Food, Sickles and Girls - The Mummies (sitting in a friends west suburban st louis upper middle class den, recording the lp to tape)
Bad Day - Samiam (driving northbound on 270 in the middle of a work day after picking up some supplies from another location for the cafe)
Tiger Lily - Luna (sitting in a downtown park with a lady and noticing all the little bottles of jack and knowing a non 0 number were probably from her before i showed up)
etc etc… lot’s of thoughts and feelings….enjoy the tunes

The perfect way to end the week. A new version of “Never Arriving” from the upcoming live album So36. streaming links youtu.be/OAHoTyMFR…

Sit back smooth out and let the week end the way it is gonna end.

Today is an odd one. I have hope we will continue to be kind to one another and the larger currents of power will not sweep us into something we cannot escape. To that end here is a random video I found while cleaning out my downloads folder… apparently from tumblr…where all good things live.

Saw a post featuring Lydia Lunch which naturally made me think of Richard Kern, which made me think of Sonic Youth. I first became aware of him via the still of his film used as the cover for EVOL. I ended up with several of his books over the years. Always loved his transgressive nature.

Some sundays you just need a little 90’s pep
